Andy says Baldwin’s tantrum violated federal criminal laws

Andy says there should not be two standards of justice, one for celebrities and one for ordinary citizens.

Andy says the TSA has a difficult job and flight crews have difficult assignments; they should not be abused by “airheads” like Alec Baldwin.

(NEW YORK) (December 13, 2011) Independent Republican Presidential Candidate Andy Martin will hold a New York City news conference today, Tuesday, December 13th to release a letter Andy has sent to Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood asking LaHood to ground NBC TV personality Alec Baldwin for committing criminal acts on an American airlines flight last week. LaHood supervises the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

“Refusing to follow instructions from a member of a flight crew is a criminal act Andy says. “Yet Alec Baldwin is being allowed to ‘skate’ for his tantrum on an American Airlines flight because Baldwin is a celebrity. This is two-faced and two-tiered justice. If anyone else had done what Baldwin did, they would have been criminally prosecuted.

“I am asking Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood to ground Alec Baldwin for a minimum of thirty days. Baldwin should not be allowed to create a public spectacle and get off scot-free. LaHood does not control criminal prosecutions but he certainly controls the ‘no fly list persons who defy flight crews should be placed on the no fly list for a minimum of thirty days even in the absence of a criminal prosecution.

“I don’t like the security procedures any more than anyone else. And I know that with tens of thousands of TSA employees and thousands of flights every day mistakes may be made. We should be alert to abuses, errors and overreaching by the agency. But we should also respect that TSA employees have a difficult assignment. No one likes to be x-rayed, or examined or wanded.

“It is an ironclad rule that once the cabin door closes, all electronic devices should be turned off (frankly I like the quiet of flight; I am not anxious to hear cell phones in the air). Baldwin’s aggressive, boorish and ultimately criminal behavior should be punished with a reasonable sanction.

“Mr. Baldwin thinks his misconduct is all a joke, a topic for funny lines. He disrupted a flight, disrupted other passengers (for which Baldwin has apologized) and disrupted the airline’s operations. In my opinion, a thirty-day suspension of his right to fly would be reasonable. I invite others to contact me with their suggestions. I hope Secretary LaHood treats Baldwin’s misconduct seriously. Otherwise, other celebrities will be emboldened to act in an ‘oppositional’ and abusive and ultimately criminal manner on other flights. There should be zero tolerance for Baldwin’s misconduct Andy says.

Dear Ray:

I am writing to ask you to initiate some action against NBC TV personality Alec Baldwin for his tantrum last week on an American Airlines flight. Disobeying a crew member is a federal criminal offense. I realize you do not enforce the criminal laws. But TSA and DOT can impose administrative punishments for inappropriate behavior on a flight.

Mr. Baldwin seems to think the laws do not apply to celebrities. He suffers from the “Lindsay Lohan personality disorder

I would recommend that Baldwin be suspended from flying and be placed on the “no-fly list” for thirty days. That seems to me to be an appropriate administrative action even if federal prosecutors decline to prosecute. The TSA and DOT independently have a vital interest in ensuring that there is appropriate behavior on board airliners.
