New Board Game Teaches Girls Relationship, Safety Skills
PLEASANTON, CA January 3, 2013 A new, fun-to-play board game called Jerky Johnny™ has a serious mission: to help end violence in women by teaching young girls and teens ages 10-16 important personal safety & relationship skills. Jerky Johnny™ will be launched nationally on February 14th, V-Day a global activist movement day to end violence against women and girls around the world.
According to The National Crime Prevention Council, one in three American girls are in an emotionally or physically abusive
relationship, and 83% of all girls experience sexual harassment at some time in their lives. Jerky Johnny™ is an entertaining role-playing game that helps young and teenage girls recognize when they may be in an unhealthy or risky relationship and teaches them how to respond.
By playing the board game, girls ages 10-16 learn to speak up with peers about boy/girl relationships, and to recognize the signs of a dangerous person or situation. Players do this in a fun, non-threatening game setting.
“Jerky Johnny™ got me to open up & tell about stuff that has happened" says Melanie, age 14. With its theme: To give girls a voice and a choice Jerky Johnny™ hopes to make a global impact on the way girls look at relationships, and to make better decisions regarding their safety.
The game was designed by a mom and professional self-defense instructor who has been teaching empowerment classes to girls for the past 10 years. “Experience has taught us that girls want to play Jerky Johnny™ because it provides an easy way to discuss real-life situations" Dara Connolly, the game’s creator says.
Mrs. Connolly hopes parents & daughters will play the game together. She adds: “Many parents don’t know how to talk to their daughters about bullying, peer pressure, or relationships. Unfortunately, because of that, important safety skills can be left unsaid."
With over one billion girls and women in the world victims of rape or sexual assault (source: One Billion Rising), Jerky Johnny™ can open a dialogue about these topics.
You can open your heart this Valentine’s Day and join millions of others in a movement to end the violence by supporting a board game that gives girls relationship skills to last a lifetime. Significant proceeds from the game will go to women’s charities for equality.
You can learn more about Jerky Johnny™ or pre-order the game at: www.jerkyjohnny.com.
