2013-12-02 19:25:44 - Healthcare exchanges were identified among the top three 2013 ACA milestones impacting the business of healthcare in the last year.

SEA GIRT, NJ, USA, December 2, 2013 --- According to one respondent to HIN’s tenth annual Healthcare Trends and Forecasts, not participating in the 2014 exchanges was its best business decision of 2013.

Overall, state notifications regarding the exchanges were among the top three 2013 ACA milestones impacting the business of healthcare in the last year, said 14 percent of respondents --- behind the Medicare bundled payment pilot (17 percent) and Medicaid payments for primary care (15 percent).

Respondents also identified a trifecta of value-based priorities for the coming year, deeming population health management (56 percent), care coordination (51 percent) and integrated care delivery (42 percent) initiatives most worthy of their attention in 2014.

More results from the survey are available in the

latest HINtelligence report, "Healthcare Trends in 2014: Putting Money on Population Health, Care Coordination and Integrated Care Delivery," a complimentary downloadable HIN white paper.

NEWS FACTS: HIN's white paper, "Healthcare Trends in 2014: Putting Money on Population Health, Care Coordination and Integrated Care Delivery," summarizes how 136 healthcare companies fared in 2013 and what trends they expect for 2014. Other data highlights from the survey include the following:

* Healthcare has had a few regrets in 2013, lamenting its shortsightedness in anticipating resource consumption, budget requirements and the competition.

* Support for continued consolidation among health plans, health systems and physicians has dwindled: the number who view consolidation as positive dropped from 59 to 44 percent in the last year.

* Successful programs in 2013 included home visiting physician program expansion and telephone monitoring between actual visits.

QUOTE ATTRIBUTABLE TO MELANIE MATTHEWS, HIN EXECUTIVE VP AND COO:

"From an early surge in Medicare accountable care collaborations to the problematic rollout of the nation's historic health insurance exchanges during a 16-day government shutdown, healthcare in 2013 has been nothing short of unpredictable. This report not only details what healthcare companies learned in 2013, but it also predicts trends expected to emerge in 2014."
