Nalco, the world’s largest Sustainability Services Company focused on industrial water, energy and air applications will discuss about TSE (Treated Sewage Effluent) usage at Fleming Gulf's Kingdom Trigeneration Summit on 29 -30 September in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where they are participating as a Official Platinum Water Partner.
Fleming Gulf interviewed Gerhard Bingel, Sr. Industry Development Manager – Light segment MEA region at Nalco Gulf LTD on his views about TSE.
Q: Which water type is better for district cooling - seawater, TSE or potable water? and why?
A: Municipal/potable is the simplest/easiest to use but not sustainable and expensive as desalinated with energy with all the environmental aspects of this. So, TSE is the most sustainable as recycled and mostly readily available in
urban areas due to the human waste water production. Sea water requires expensive corrosion resistant equipment and can only be utilized if plant is close to sea – e.g. not in Riyadh.
Q: Is there any risk involved in using TSE water for domestic/home purposes?
A: If done properly with a good treatment and microbio control program in place there is no additional risk to humans compared to any other cooling tower operation. Monitoring and control is a must as well as a good reliable water treatment program. TSE is widely used for irrigation in GCC cities and sprayed all over the cities in the gardens and green spots!.
Q: How TSE is better for the environment when it uses chemicals to make the water reusable?
A: Very simple - the use of TSE is the only sustainable solution because it is a true reuse of water. The chemicals are not added to make TSE reusable but to protect the cooling systems against corrosion, microbio and scale, as with any other type of water used, would be needed. There is not really much more chemicals applied, but more careful selection and monitoring of the treatment is needed. The TSE - if not used needs to be discharged somewhere as the Waste Water plants have a continuous effluent flow they must get rid off.
Evaporative Cooling works on evaporating water and if this amount (evaporation is only a part of the total water need in a CT) is utilized from other REUSED water sorce it protects the environment as less CO2 is used for desalination and narural ground water resources are protected
