OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/06/09 -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway today commended the Ontario History and Social Science Teachers' Association (OHASSTA) on their work to pass on Canada's military tradition to the next generation.

"Canada has a proud military history and, on behalf of the men and women of our Canadian Forces, it is my pleasure to thank teachers for sharing the stories of our heroes with young people," Minister MacKay said.

The OHASSTA National Leadership Award was presented to Minister MacKay in recognition of his outstanding contribution to leadership and support for the men and women of the Canadian Forces at the organization's annual meeting November 6 in Toronto. The theme of this year's conference was Stand Proud for Canada's Military Heroes.

"In these most challenging and difficult times in our military history, Minister MacKay has stood up for the best interests of Canada and our men and women in uniform, at home and abroad," said OHASSTA President Jan Haskings-Winner.

"I feel privileged to accept this award on behalf of the members of the Canadian Forces, natural leaders all," said Minister MacKay. "Since becoming Minister of National Defence, I have learned so much about responsibility, dedication and honour from CF members of all ranks. Their contribution to Canada is an example for all of us."

OHASSTA represents all history and social science teachers in Ontario and has over 500 members. It has presented leadership awards to former Prime Minister Joe Clark, author Pierre Burton, former Saskatchewan Premier Roy Romanow, former First Nations National Chief Ovide Mercredi, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and many others over its 30-year history.

The National Leadership award comes with a cash prize, which Minister MacKay will be donating to the Military Families Fund.
