- Timothy F. Brick, chairman of the board of directors of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, issues the following statement regarding the passing today of Dorothy Green, an environmental maverick on water issues who was one of the founders of Heal the Bay:

"Dorothy Green has been a brilliant visionary and leader in the realm of water

policy in California for many decades. A personal friend and mentor of mine for 35 years, Dorothy always exemplified a deep passion for protecting the environment and for the efficient use of water. She set the standard of stewardship for an entire generation of water and environmental activists.

"Dorothy also founded several organizations that have been instrumental in shaping Southern California's water and environmental policy and will continue her work of protecting our streams, groundwater basins, watersheds and the ocean. These organizations -- which include Heal the Bay, the California Water Impact Network, and the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Rivers Watershed Council -- will serve as a lasting testament to her.

"Her vision and leadership will not be forgotten."

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a cooperative of 26 cities and water agencies serving nearly 19 million people in six counties. The district imports water from the Colorado River and Northern California to supplement local supplies, and helps its members to develop increased water conservation, recycling, storage and other resource-management programs.
