Originally from Chicago, but now based in Rancho Cucamonga, California, Mel has been doing stand-up for over 16 years.
“One day I asked God, “ you gave the talent to be a comedian, what do you want me to do with it?” The inspirational whisper came and the “Squeaky Clean Comedy Show” was born.”
An opportunity at the Ontario Improv was soon to
follow. At that time, they didn’t have any “clean shows” so the Improv decided to open their doors on a Saturday afternoon and give Austin’s new concept a try.
The shows started in November, 2012 with only 79 people and now they are selling out, averaging 320 people. The show is a blend of energy, fun and variety without the use of any profanity.
Austin draws from a large pool of the funniest clean comics in the country. Each show has a different lineup.
“I’m starting a movement. Clean stand-up comedy is coming back,” Austin exclaimed. “It was a challenge in the beginning and was a long process, but people are appreciating it,” he added.
Austin has people coming up to him after shows saying how refreshing it is and how much they enjoyed the show. Austin adds” The world is trying to get comfortable with clean because it has been dirty for so long. “
“Many guests are surprised at how funny a clean stand-up comedy can actually be without bad language. Comedy is an art, a craft and a talent. Vulgarity is not a required ingredient to humor. Long running TV shows like “Seinfeld” “Frasier” and “MASH” are lasting proof of that. ”
”Comedy is a great way to tell the world your story. The key to comedy success is the format. You have to structure your jokes accordingly. You find the rhythm and then you are in control. This can all be achieved to entertain an audience without the use of bad language,” concluded Austin.
