When filling her nomination Kirti found that another person, with the name of Baleshwar Bharti has also filed a nomination from the Sasaram (reserved) seat as a candidate of BSP.
She however was allowed to file nomination on raising protest but was denied the ‘elephant’ symbol.
She took out the grudge on her aunt. “This is a conspiracy against me by bua (aunt). She doesn't want me to contest the elections against her” she was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, Bharti insisted on himself as the "bona fide" BSP candidate.
According to BSP’s state general secretary Pramod Pappu Singh, the confusion arose as Kirti failed to file her nomination by March 19 as was directed by BSP leadership.
"She could not
be even reached over phone till late last night. So we thought she was not interested to contest on the party's ticket. Today being the last date for filing of nominations, BSP asked Bharti to file papers as the party's candidate he said.
He further added that, “as of now, Bharti is our party's official candidate. However, we will take a final decision in the matter in the next few days
Kirti is the granddaughter of Dalit leader Jagjivan Ram and has joined politics soon after postgraduating from New Delhi’s Jawahrlal Nehru University. She was not having a good relationship with her aunt regarding some land dispute at Palwal in Faridabad.
Meira Kumar has been in position from 2004 to 2009 by being elected to the Lok Sabha from Sasaram. Her niece Kirti has often expressed concern over neglect in the area during Meira Kumar’s rule.
