Effective October 1, 2008, Medicare expanded durable medical equipment (DME) coverage for High Frequency Chest Wall Oscillation (HFCWO) devices to a broad range of neuromuscular and neuromotor disorders, including hereditary muscular dystrophies, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, myotonic disorders, myopathies and quadriplegia.
Airway clearance therapy is an important therapeutic support choice for many conditions characterized by impaired ability
to clear the airways and manage secretions. HFCWO is a highly effective form of airway clearance therapy that has been used successfully for twenty years in disorders causing chronic airway obstruction. These include cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis. The expanded Medicare coverage ruling will now make this important component of respiratory care available to individuals whose ability to cough, respiratory status and quality of life are compromised by neuromuscular conditions. The Company's CEO, Mr. Robert D. Hansen, stated that "Medicare's decision to broaden coverage of High Frequency Chest Wall Oscillation therapy to a much broader population of people with neuro-muscular conditions is both wise and compassionate. By keeping lungs clear of excess secretions, debilitating and expensive to treat lung infections are sharply reduced."
Electromed, Inc. of New Prague, Minnesota, manufactures the SmartVest® HFCWO delivery device. The Company"s CFO, Mr. Terry Belford, stated that "Medicare"s expansion of coverage for HFCWO during these cost cutting times emphasizes the favorable cost vs. benefit relationship of using the SmartVest®."
