2013-02-19 08:39:27 - “We’re all aware of the cases involving celebrities, but you don’t have to be a celebrity to have your personal information exposed,” said Lubna Markar, Senior Marketing Manager, McAfee India & South Asia.

McAfee study reveals 86% Indians share personal or intimate text messages, emails or photos; nearly 63% Indians share their Bank Account Details and 47% share their Passwords with their partners

McAfee released findings of ‘Love, Relationships, and Technology’ survey that examines the pitfalls of sharing personal data in relationships and discloses how breakups can lead to privacy leaks online. The study highlights the need for consumers to take steps to protect themselves from cyber-stalking and exposure of private information.

“Sharing passwords with your partner might seem harmless, but it often puts you at risk for a ‘revenge of the ex’ situation, landing private information in a public platform for all to see. Everyone needs to be aware of the

risks and take the steps to make sure their personal data is safe and secure.”

Top findings from the survey include:

• The research shows that 96% of Indians believe their data and revealing photos are safe in the hands of their partners.
• McAfee has found that 77% of adults have had their personal content leaked to others without their permission. Additionally, 3 in 10 ex-partners have threatened that they would expose risqué photos of their ex online.
• Despite the risks, 53% Indians still plan to send sexy or romantic photos to their partners via email, text and social media on Valentine’s Day.
• The partner actions that lead to the exposure of personal data were :
 Lying (38%)
 Cheating (48%)
 Breaking up (41%)
 Calling off the wedding (23%)
 Posting a picture with someone else (15%)
 Others (3%)
About half of the population has regretted sending such intimate content after a break up and 49% of people have even asked their ex-partner to delete all personal content.

Cyber Stalking:
More than 73% of people surveyed have admitted to checking their significant others’ social media pages and 44% their bank accounts and nearly 72% log in to scan their partners’ emails. The survey also revealed that slightly more people (47%) track their ex-partner on Facebook and 49% check on their current partner.

To protect your private data and save yourself from such embarrassing situations, following are some tips that you can follow-
• Lock your Lips: Do not share passwords with anyone, including significant others and family members.
• Lock your Devices: Use a strong password on your phone and other mobile devices
• Love the Delete Button: Take the time to delete personal or intimate text messages, emails and photos from your email account and mobile device
• Share the Love, Not the Info: Once you share private information with those you love, that data is out of your hands and out of control.

Lastly, use a trusted integrated software such as McAfee Total Protection that guards your PC, social network, identity, family, and home network with its protection against hackers, malware, thieves, phishing, and other online threats.
