2010-01-19 16:48:34 - Fast Market Research recommends "Bangladesh Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Report Q1 2010" from Business Monitor International, now available

In its second quarterly update of the Bangladesh Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Report for 2009, BMI has extended the forecasts of 75 indicators for the Bangladesh pharmaceuticals market through to year 2013. We envisage that over the next five years sales of pharmaceutical products are set to rise. These include sales of prescription drugs and over-the-counter (OTC) medications which are expected to increase from US$858mn to US$2.04bn, thus representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.96%. In January 2009, a new five-in-one combination vaccine aimed at protecting children against Haemophilus influenza type B (Hib), was launched for the first time in Bangladesh. The vaccine, which will be administered to nearly four million children under the age of one as part

of a routine immunisation programme, is aimed at preventing severe forms of pneumonia and meningitis associated with Hib, as well as protecting against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and Hepatitis B. The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI) has combined with key partners - the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the WHO and the Hib Initiative - to provide financial and technical support to introduce the vaccine. As part of efforts to improve healthcare facilities in Bangladesh, the Minister for Health and Family Welfare announced that the government is to set up at least 6000 community clinics across the country aimed at providing primary healthcare in remote areas. The project, which will be implemented with the support of the WHO, is expected to be completed within a year. In other developments, the Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (BAPI) announced that it is planning to construct a pharmaceutical industry park as it views the country as a potential base for the production of pharmaceutical formulations. Bangladesh is currently the largest manufacturer of formulation products among the less developed nations in the Asian region and exports medicines to more than 62 countries around the world, including Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and China. With regard to the corporate sector, Active Fine Chemicals (AFC), a local private sector enterprise, announced that it had begun to manufacture raw materials and chemical reagents for the pharmaceutical industry with a view to lessening import dependency, reducing time to market and curtailing costs. At present, the few pharmaceutical companies that produce raw materials in Bangladesh are capable of producing just 5% of the total industry requirement, with most output being consumed by the manufacturing companies themselves. The rest is imported from abroad. AFC also hopes to supply raw materials worth about BDT2bn to the local market this year, and expects to be able to manufacture all of the molecules required for producing life saving drugs by 2010. The company has constructed a factory in Munshiganj at a cost of about BDT500mn for this purpose.
