2013-03-20 16:37:17 - Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Danish artist Mariann Helbo in Landscapes of the Mind

Mariann Helbo’s oil and mixed media paintings on canvas encompass an impressive array of organic, vegetal and animal forms in abstraction. Bursts of vivid color in close proximity ‘bleed’ and ‘blur’ into a mass of glowing and undulating effervescence, while Helbo’s thick layering of paint adds an impressive textural depth to the fore. Adopting a jewel toned palette and gestural treatment of pigment, Helbo captures the refracted sunlight of Skagen, Denmark, a region which for decades has been visited by artists hoping to record its extraordinary light. The artist pays homage to that environment in discussing her work, saying that, “despite my abstract style you will always find a piece of blue sky in my paintings.” Impulsive in origin, the

final works are in fact the outcome of a painstaking layering process in which a mark is made and erased until overlapping forms converge into a furious visual bounty.
Mariann Helbo was born in Århus, Denmark and currently lives and works in Skagen. In 1999 she was asked to participate in Denmark's prestigious four state juried exhibition.

The exhibitions open on March 26, 2013 and run until April 16, 2013. The opening reception will take place on the evening of Thursday, April 4, 2013.
