2013-03-20 16:37:17 - Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Danish artist Mariann Helbo in Landscapes of the Mind
Mariann Helbo’s oil and mixed media paintings on canvas encompass an impressive array of organic, vegetal and animal forms in abstraction. Bursts of vivid color in close proximity ‘bleed’ and ‘blur’ into a mass of glowing and undulating effervescence, while Helbo’s thick layering of paint adds an impressive textural depth to the fore. Adopting a jewel toned palette and gestural treatment of pigment, Helbo captures the refracted sunlight of Skagen, Denmark, a region which for decades has been visited by artists hoping to record its extraordinary light. The artist pays homage to that environment in discussing her work, saying that, “despite my abstract style you will always find a piece of blue sky in my paintings.” Impulsive in origin, the
final works are in fact the outcome of a painstaking layering process in which a mark is made and erased until overlapping forms converge into a furious visual bounty.
Mariann Helbo was born in Århus, Denmark and currently lives and works in Skagen. In 1999 she was asked to participate in Denmark's prestigious four state juried exhibition.

About the Exhibition
If you are looking for an exhibition that celebrates the diversity and visual delights of the world, and reflects the spring feeling of growth and life, come to Agora Gallery this spring. In Landscapes of the Mind, artists bring all of their interests and ideas together to create works that illuminate both aspects of the world itself and the ways in which we interact with them. Thoughtful, lovely, and touching on a number of levels, this is an example of the way art can transform simple materials into conduits of spiritual depth and poignant meaning. East Meets West: An Exhibition of Fine Arts from Asia presents the work of talented Asian artists who delve into their personal history and cultural heritage to create art of astonishing power and appeal. Perfectly balanced, intellectually rigorous and emotionally evocative, this show will stir the imagination and touch the soul. In addition, a breath of air and a sense of barely contained energy emanates from the works of Dick Perez: a solo exhibition of baseball's finest. The artist has portrayed the stars of the baseball world as official artist to prestigious institutions such as the Philadelphia Phillies and the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the passion he has for both the game and for art are clearly demonstrated in his thrilling works. The exhibitions open on March 26, 2013 and run until April 16, 2013. The opening reception will take place on the evening of Thursday, April 4, 2013. Entrance is free and art lovers are warmly encouraged to attend to meet some of the artists who created these delightful works of art.
