The week began with firefighters battling a fire accident in two warehouses in Dubai's Al Quoz Industrial Area. UAE is expected to introduce a new fire-safety code as authorities move to improve fire-safety standards.
The 4th Annual Middle East Fire Safe Forum, 2013 kicked off today at the Intercontinental Dubai Festival City. Bringing together global fire safety prevention experts the conference focused on the best practices to be implemented for fire safety. Presiding over the conference, Major General Rashed Thani Al Matroushi, Director General - Department of Civil Defence – Dubai delivered the inaugural address to attendees followed by the Department of Civil Defence presenting a discourse on understanding regional fire codes. Subsequently, an executive panel discussion themed – Master
your Disaster saw speakers Eng. Bassem Gamil - Abu Dhabi Civil Defence, Gary Reason London Fire Brigade, Morgan Hurely - Society for Fire Protection Engineers, James Dolan - NFPA, Dr. Jim Glockling - THE FPA. The discussion focused on keeping communities safe, how public awareness reduces affects of a disaster & government initiatives for effective consciousness.
Day one had two streams, track one was on dealing with fire and track two on understanding fire dynamics allowing delegates a choice of attending either one. Speakers Morgan Hurley, James Dolan, & Gary Reason were seen conducting 30 minute discussions each on topics ranging from responsible use of fire models, life safety code assembly at nightclubs & Safety & Security Considerations at the london olympics respectively. Followed by them was John Boyce - British Airport Authority, Head of Fire-Technical Standards and Assurance speaking on F ire Engineering Assurance & developing a successful model. Concluding the first day was a panel discussion themed Fire Accidents - More Industrial OR Environmental and Human featuring panelists, Dr. Gunnar Jenssen – SINTEF, Pedro Armijo -COWI, Peter Stephenson - Buro Happold, & Lutz Noethlich - SCHOTT Middle East.
The 4th Annual Middle East Forum focuses on understanding fire dynamics for a safer environment. Day two of the forum today will see sessions ranging from how to achieve higher levels of fire safety in nuclear plants, training & developing fire professionals regionally, & innovation in fire detection among others. Attendees will also be seen participating at another simultaneous two track sessiosn focused on understanding fire behavior & fire prevention & protection respectively. The last day of the conference will see a scheduled workshop where delegates will be apprised on the safest way for smoke extraction and compartmentalization. The 3 day event comprising of workshops, thought provoking case studies, networking sessions and interactive workshops will unravel knowledge and expertise making it one of the leading events dedicated to Fire Safety prevention. The conference is held under the esteemed patronage of UAE Directorate General of Civil Defense - Dubai.
