LATEST: Chinese director LOU YE has been slammed with a five year filming ban after screening his controversial movie SUMMER PALACE at the Cannes Film Festival in France without government approval in May (06).
Ye, 40, flouted the rules by sending his film chronicling the bloody 1989 Tiananmen Square protests straight to the festival.
Ye insists the film is a love story, and wanted to show it without Beijing's approval because it "belongs to everyone".
But his movie will now be confiscated, and all profits from it seized, according to Xinhua news agency.
