LIZA MINNELLI paid tribute to the life and work of her friend MARVIN HAMLISCH at a star-studded tribute to the late composer on Tuesday (18Sep12).
The Cabaret star performed If He Really Knew Me from the musical They're Playing My Song
at the memorial service, held at New York's Juilliard School.
The emotional actress told the audience, "He was one of my few constants. He was always there. He always was and always will be." Barbra Streisand also took the stage and recalled how she first met Hamlisch in 1963 when he played piano for her Broadway show Funny Girl, and brought her chocolate doughnuts every morning.
She joked, "He always brought me two, and so our love affair began." Aretha Franklin performed the James Bond theme Nobody Does It Better, from The Spy Who Loved Me, and changed the words to, "Marvin, you were the best." Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and actor Richard Gere were among the mourners who turned out to remember Hamlisch, who died on 6 August (12) after a short illness.
