KONE Corporation, press release, February 26, 2013
KONE has won an order to provide 153 KONE TransitMaster® escalators, 42 KONE
MonoSpace® Special elevators, and four KONE TravelMaster® autowalks for the
extension of the Copenhagen Metro in the Danish capital. The equipment is
destined for 17 new underground stations that will make up a new city circle
line, Cityringen, that adds to the Copenhagen Metro's existing network of
stations.
KONE's People Flow® solutions will facilitate the efficient movement
of passengers in the extension, which will consist of 15.2 km of dual
underground railway tunnel linking downtown Copenhagen, the so-called "bridge
quarters" that surround the city center, and the independent municipality of
Frederiksberg, which is located within Copenhagen's borders.
"We are extremely pleased that the Copenhagen Metro chose KONE as its supplier
for this major enhancement
of the Danish capital's transport network," says Ari
Lehtoranta, EVP and Area Director of KONE Central and Northern Europe.
Once completed in 2018, Cityringen will expand the capacity of Copenhagen's
subway system from 50 million to 130 million passengers per year. The extension
is the largest construction project to be carried out in Denmark since World War
Two. It has also facilitated what The Museum of Copenhagen has termed the
biggest archaeological dig to be done in Northern Europe so far. Archeologists
are carrying out extensive excavations for artifacts and prehistoric finds at
one of the sites along the future metro line.
The order was booked in the first quarter of 2013.
