AMERICAN PIE star CHRIS KLEIN has escaped extra jail time following his J une (10) arrest for driving under the influence (DUI) after agreeing to e nrol in an alcohol education programme.
The actor was taken into custody and charged with
two misdemeanours aft er failing a sobriety test when his car was pulled over by cops on an L.A .. freeway.
He spent four days behind bars before he was released on bail and he su bsequently checked himself into Utah's Cirque Lodge rehab facility for tw o months of treatment in a bid to kick his alcohol issues.
Klein pleaded no contest to the DUI counts during a court hearing on Fr iday morning (03Sep10).
Judge David B. Gelfound noted the star's efforts to beat his drink prob lems and ruled he did not deserve the maximum sentence of a year behind b ars, choosing instead to sentence him to time already served.
He was also placed on four years probation, ordered to undergo alcohol education classes and told he can only drive a car fitted with an alcohol interlocking device, reports TMZ.com.
Klein told the court, "I apologise for my wrongdoing and I really appre ciate the court giving me the opportunity to prove how seriously I took a ll of this." The star's run-in with the law in June (10) was his second DUI arrest i n five years - he was busted on a similar charge in 2005.
