Key Areas of Scientific Collaboration and Technology Development to be streamlined through EU-US TTIP

Print article Print article
2014-02-18 21:04:20 - Brussels/Cambridge MA: On February 25th, 2014, the British Consulate-General and the UK Science & Innovation Network in cooperation with the Transatlantic Science Forum (TSF) will host a meeting on the EU-US Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership (TTIP) for Science.

The meeting will focus on key areas of scientific collaboration and technology development which could be streamlined through an EU-US TTIP agreement, including: regulatory science; intellectual property; industrial innovation and public procurement; financing of innovation; and subsidies to firms.

The event hosted by the British Consulate-General and the UK Science & Innovation Network is embedded in the context of a series of meetings of the TSF which held meetings in Washington, D.C., Brussels, Rome and New York.

The TSF is an outcome of the EU Science: Global Challenges, Global Collaboration (ES:GC2) conference held at the European Parliament from March 4-8, 2013.

TSF, co-chaired by Sean Kelly, MEP and Mr Declan Kirrane of ISC Intelligence in Science, is dedicated to exploring

the implications of research and innovation in the TTIP. The main objective of the TSF is to input a chapter exclusively on research and innovation to the formal TTIP negotiation process.

This first TSF meeting worked as a fact-finding forum to establish an agenda and priorities for other TSF meetings as well as identify mechanisms for the TSF to input during the TTIP negotiations. Mr Sean Kelly gave a brief introduction to the event where he said, “Enhanced cooperation in the field of science could be one of the key positive outcomes of a successful TTIP and I view the TSF as an opportunity to provide expert input into this process.”

The “TTIP for Science” meeting in Boston will highlight three main speakers who will give key-note speeches followed by a fruitful discussion: Andrew Mitchell, UK Director of Prosperity, Foreign Commonwealth Office; Eric Nakajima, Assistant Secretary for Innovation, MA Executive Office for Housing; and Development and Jonathan Poole, Senior VP - Shire HGT.

Future TSF meetings will be held in San Francisco, London, Washington, D.C., and Brussels.

Editor’s Note

Transatlantic Science Forum

The Transatlantic Science Forum (TSF) is a group dedicated to discussing how the Final Report of the United States-European Union High Level Working Group on Jobs and Growth, commonly known as the proposed US-EU Free Trade agreement can lead to further transatlantic science collaboration between:

• Scientists and Representatives of Research & Academia
• Members of the European Parliament
• Parliamentarians of national Parliaments of EU Member States
• Members of Congress
• Representatives of Industry
• Representatives of Stakeholder Organisations

This holistic approach is intended to build on the participation between research and science programs and to enhance the transatlantic collaboration in science, technology, research and innovation. The forum will produce a report enumerating the TSF’s recommendations which will feed into the formal negotiation process. Additional meetings will be held in San Francisco, London, Dublin, Washington, D.C., and Brussels.
