With Vice Mayor Lin Ren-yi, Director General Shih Jhe of Bureau of Cultural Affairs and 16 groups of creative artists attending the opening ceremony, the 2009 Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival was opened at night on November 21 in the vibrating sound, light accompanying fire, and feather dances performed by A Moving Sound at Moonlight Theater in the Pier-2 Art

District.

In addition to giving various wonderful performances, participating artists also explained to visitors their artworks on display, which made people realize that a large container not only can carry or store commercial goods, but also can be used to create unique artworks.

A Moving Sound has created a new musical expression that mixed Taiwanese, Chinese and other Asian musical ideas in inspired modern song combinations and performed spontaneous songs based on both Chinese and Western instruments. Its transcendent vocals and poetic dances connected ancient and modern times which transported the audience across cultural boundaries.

Accompanied by Kaohsiung City Chinese Orchestra musician Kuo Chin-Tsai who played Suona Horn, which is a traditional Chinese folk music instrument, Australian artist Colin Offord also sang a song. Their performance combining Chinese and Western culture received loud applause from the very impressed audience. The audience was thrilled by marvelous singing of the local Blue Fantasy Super Band.

The biannual Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival has become a unique cultural feature of Kaohsiung City since 2001. Each container artwork has witnessed the rise and decline of shipping industry in the recent decade while Kaohsiung developed its urban civilization. The artists with ingenious hands had used heavily damaged and rusted containers as a medium of creation beyond ordinary people’s imagination.

In addition to reflecting the actual benefit of eco-friendly recycling, the utilization of discarded containers represents the spiritual dimension man pursue in real world life. The theme of container creation in the 2009 Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival was trying to make each container as an embryo in the process of building an “ideal city.”
