In 2012, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) started process which will result in introduction of more than thousand of new gTLDs (generic top-level domains). Top-Level domain is the last part of the domain name (e.g. .com, .org, .net, etc.

This means that you will not only be able to register domain like yourname.com, yourname.org, yourname.biz (and couple of others), you will be able to choose from more than thousand of gTLDs like .sport, .fashion, .blog, .guide or even .lol.

The new gTLDs aren't available yet; they will be available in end of 2013 / start 2014. So why bother with them now? The answer is: Who comes first, catches the best domain name(s) (under the new gTLDs). Companies are

starting to introduce pre-registrations, auctions, or trademark claims. So if you watch the new gTLD rush, you will be able to catch the domain name(s) of your interest before someone else does.
