In her role as Dean, Scheffel will work closely with academic leaders, faculty and administrative staff to further develop,
administer and promote the academic programs and academic support functions of JIU's School of Education. She will also oversee JIU's comprehensive education degree programs, which include the Master of Education programs, the Education Specialist program and the Doctorate of Education degree program, as well as the Pathways to Accomplished Teaching certificate program, and the Classroom Instruction That Works course.
"Debora has extensive knowledge and experience with all facets of higher education and we are very pleased to have her in this leadership role," said Jones International University's Chancellor Glenn R. Jones. "She will be instrumental in helping JIU's School of Education deliver the most current, relevant and engaging content and to provide our students with additional support services to make the most of their JIU education and their teaching careers."
Prior to joining JIU, Scheffel held a tenured professorship at the University of Northern Colorado. More recently, she served as the Director of Literacy Grants and Initiatives and Director of Colorado Reading First at the Colorado Department of Education.

Scheffel has a far-reaching background in academic assessment, serving as the Director of Academic Assessment at two universities, and has been a visiting scholar at the United States Air Force Academy. Her academic background is in communication disorders and special education with research interests in cognitive psychology and learning theory as related to implications for learning environments, brain-behavior relationships and learning, and reading and oral language disabilities in children. Scheffel has worked in six states in a variety of post-secondary educational contexts, and is a published author in literacy, special education and higher education assessment. Her professional affiliations include the International Neuropsychological Society and the Council for Exceptional Children. She currently serves on the Colorado Literacy Council and serves on the editorial board of Learning Disabilities Research and Practice, Colorado Reading Council Journal (CRCJ) and Journal of the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition.
