The royal couple are considering the move following news Akihito is in danger of developing bone disease osteoporosis due to treatment he underwent for prostate cancer.
The pair's son Prince Naruhito called on them to spend more time resting during a press conference to mark his 48th birthday on Saturday (23.02.08).
He said: “I think it is necessary for those around them to consider making more time for them to rest and take it easy.” A health check last month showed no recurrence of the cancer for which 74-year-old Akihito underwent surgery five years ago.
However, tests did show his bone density has dropped as a result of hormones he took to battle the cancer, meaning that he is in danger of developing osteoporosis without medical intervention.
Michiko, 73, has suffered bouts of dizziness and intestinal bleeding, but medical examinations have not pinpointed any serious medical problems.
Both Akihito and Michiko are reportedly being encouraged to go on a diet and exercise regime to improve their health.
