Intelsat, Ltd., the world’s leading provider of fixed satellite services, announced that Gilat Satcom Ltd. signed multi-year renewal and expansion deals with Intelsat, securing capacity and teleport services that will increase and enhance Gilat Satcom’s offerings for its domestic networks and broadband services to its customers in Africa.

Gilat Satcom renewed its contract for capacity on Intelsat 901 and Intelsat 702,

located at 342º E and 66º E, respectively. The company also signed prelaunch capacity commitments on Intelsat 14 (IS-14) and Intelsat 17, which will be located at 315º E and 66º E, respectively. In addition to these commitments, Gilat Satcom also initiated services on Intelsat 1R (IS-1R), at its current orbital location and contracted for additional capacity that it will use once IS-1R is moved to 310º E following the launch of IS-14. Gilat Satcom also will utilize Intelsat’s Fuchsstadt, Germany, teleport to host its broadband platforms. Intelsat is currently expanding its Fuchsstadt facility with the addition of 15 new antennas to enhance customer options for accessing the Intelsat fleet.

“Long-term planning for our network platform and maintaining continuity of service into and out of Africa is critical for meeting current and future needs of our customers. This deal also allows us to expand our business in a new direction by providing domestic network and broadband services for our African customers,” said Roy Hess, Gilat Satcom’s CEO.
“Intelsat’s satellite and teleport infrastructure provides us with an effective solution for delivering the most in-demand applications such as Internet connectivity, private networks, VoIP services and disaster recovery communications to our enterprise, ISP and government customers.”

“Intelsat’s commitment to expanding its satellite capacity and upgrading its teleports provides our customers with the infrastructure they need to support their long-term business strategies," said Kurt Riegelman, Intelsat’s Senior Vice President, Global Sales. “By 2012, Intelsat will deliver approximately 5,000 MHz of incremental capacity to the African region.”

Intelsat will be exhibiting at stand D2 during AfricaCom 2009, Africa’s annual congress and exhibition for the telecommunications industry, which is being held at the Cape Town Convention Center in Cape Town, South Africa, 11-12 November.
