Ingres Corporation, a leading provider of open source database management software and support services, today congratulates customer German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) on being named an InfoWorld 100 top IT solution for 2008. BGR is recognized for moving its entire infrastructure of seismic monitoring operations to open source, and adapting 100 programs to a new data-collecting and monitoring environment centered on Ingres. IDG's InfoWorld awards honor companies for IT projects that exemplify intelligent, creative uses of technology to meet business and technical objectives.
BGR is the geoscientific center within Germany"s federal government and part of the government"s scientific and technical infrastructure. One of BGR"s primary tasks is to continuously monitor seismic activity which requires

careful monitoring to identify long term trends and make forecasts on future earthquakes and accompanying seismic hazards. Because fast access to data and permanent availability are two of the key requirements for successful operation of the institute"s mission, BGR adopted the open source version of the Ingres Database, a highly reliable, stable database crucial to retrieve data from instruments that monitor global seismic activity and store evaluations of seismic waveform data.
In addition, the system also monitors compliance with the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), a prohibition of all forms of nuclear testing underground, underwater, and in the atmosphere.
"In our sector, the reliability and availability of data are decisive criteria. Ingres provides an extremely robust database -- its reliability has consistently helped us exceed our required 98% data availability, and its flexibility has allowed us to accelerate our research and analyses considerably," said Markus Dohmann, BGR geophysicist. "With Ingres we not only benefit from the lower cost of ownership attributed to the open source business model, but from the strong community surrounding open source as well."
"We extend big congratulations to BGR. Working with this organization has been an exciting venture from the very beginning," said Bertram Mandel, managing director CEMEA and vice president of sales & services at Ingres. "For more than two decades, BGR has relied on us to help them manage very interesting sets of data around seismic activities and also use Ingres" Database to protect the world against illegal nuclear testing " this is no small feat."
Every year, the InfoWorld 100 Awards celebrate 100 IT organizations that have implemented and integrated technologies in innovative ways in pursuit of concrete business goals. These 100 real-world projects stand as proof that striking a new path in IT can reap deep organizational rewards. Nominations were submitted by InfoWorld readers, technology partners, and end-user companies in late-summer. To be considered, projects must use multiple technologies in innovative ways to serve well-defined business goals. Profiles of winners, along with InfoWorld's editorial analysis and insight, are available at cts.businesswire.com/ct/CT"id=smartlink&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww ...
"Breathing new life into outdated operations, advancing business goals with inventive use of technology -- this year's winners demonstrate, once again, that innovative, business-minded IT is the lifeblood of successful organizations," said Jason Snyder, Senior Editor for InfoWorld.
