Improving The Quality of MP3s

2008-03-14 21:10:56 - Hey babe, ever take a walk on the wild side?

Lou Reed is in the headlines recently for being a keynote speaker at the South By Southwest Music Festival + Conference which is currently underway in Austin, Texas. The topic of discussion is the music we are listening to today and the format for which it is in. We are all familiar with the MP3 format of music which can

be found littered over the Internet as well as in Internet based file exchange programs.

Reed lamented his concern with the current state of audio formats and stated, “It’s like technology is taking us backwards.” The simple fact is MP3 formats do not offer a sound quality of the highest caliber. The worst part is, people simply are unaware of anything better in musical formats, therefore it is easy to accept the poor sound quality. Reed is taking a stand against the current audio formats and is calling out for people to request a higher standard in musical playback.

Not hearing the instruments in the music may have been something we were all aware of or not. The ability to compress our files and place them onto a small MP3 player allows us to have quantity over quality. The sound quality is marginal and it feeds the need of being able to take music anywhere. Reed expressed his feelings by saying, “It’s like if no one knows any better or doesn’t care, it’s gonna stay on a really, really low level and people who like good sound are gonna be thought of as some kind of strange zoo animal.” There is hope for our euphonic demand as there is a higher standard of MP3 which does sound better. There is still much improvement that must take place.

It all comes down to people not knowing what they are missing. If they were turned on to a format of music that was in fact noticeably better than the current MP3 format, there might be a migration to the newer technology. The biggest push will be to have the music easily available in these formats and have it be compatible with players currently on the market or the need to create a new player. Sounds like a new opportunity for a digital media company.
