ISC, together with Irish Members of the European Parliament, is organising an afternoon seminar and dinner debate to discuss the challenges and perspectives for Ireland arising from Horizon 2020, the EU’s forthcoming Framework Programme for research and development and demonstration.
The seminar will take place at the European Parliament in Brussels on January 31st 2012.
The objective of the meeting is to facilitate discussion with Irish MEPs on the future priorities for the research community on the island of Ireland and to consider the potential impact of Horizon 2020 for industry and academia. On November 30 2011, the European Commission published its proposals for Horizon 2020. This marks the beginning of the negotiation process leading to the adoption of an agreed legislative package by the Council of Ministers and European Parliament. Over the coming year, these institutions will therefore consider the priorities, themes and implementing instruments up to the adoption of Horizon 2020 and related legislation. It will be important for research institutions and science- and technology-based industries across Ireland that their priorities and challenges
are understood by their representatives in the European Parliament.
Horizon 2020 is the title of the EU's next Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration. The Framework Programmes are funding programmes created by the European Union in order to support and encourage transnational research in the European Union. The Seventh Framework Programme - the largest to date in terms of scope and funding - is due for completion at the end of 2013. Horizon 2020 will run from 2014 to 2020. Under the European Commission proposals, Horizon 2020 will significantly increase EU funding for scientific research and development.
The event will be organised under the patronage of MEPs from across Ireland - these are: Sean Kelly MEP; Marian Harkin MEP; Pat The Cope Gallagher MEP; Liam Aylward MEP; Gay Mitchell MEP, and Mairead McGuinness MEP.
