"Think Asia, Think Hong Kong," the largest Hong Kong promotion ever launched in the United States, takes place next week in New York and Los Angeles. The US campaign will highlight Hong Kong's advantages for American companies seeking new business opportunities in Asia, particularly the Chinese mainland.
Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive CY Leung will be among the more than 200 senior government officials and business leaders from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland travelling to the United States for the promotion. The mission includes representatives from 12 business and industry sectors.
The events are expected to attract more than 3,000 US corporate leaders, government representatives, heads of small and medium-sized enterprises, services providers, academics and opinion leaders with a special
interest in China and Asia in general.
New York, Los Angeles Symposiums
Think Asia, Think Hong Kong will feature two major symposiums: in New York, 11 June, and Los Angeles, 14 June. Mr Leung will speak at the opening of the New York symposium, along with Francisco J Sanchez, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, US Department of Commerce, and Jack So, Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). In Los Angeles, opening-session speakers include Hong Kong SAR Government Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Gregory So and California State Controller John Chiang.
In all, nearly 60 influential speakers from Hong Kong, the US and the mainland will address the symposiums and thematic sessions in the two cities. They include: Andy Bird, Chairman, Walt Disney International, The Walt Disney Company; Stephen Bird, CEO, Asia Pacific, Citi; Ronnie C. Chan, Chairman, Hang Lung Properties Ltd; Norman T.L. Chan (New York only), Chief Executive, Hong Kong Monetary Authority; Anita Fung, Group General Manager and CEO Hong Kong, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd; Dr William Fung, Group Chairman, Li & Fung Ltd; Maurice R. Greenberg (New York only), Chairman and CEO, CV Starr & Co, Inc; He Guangbei, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive, Bank of China (Hong Kong) Ltd; James E. Thompson, Chairman and Founder, Crown Worldwide Group; Marjorie Yang, Chairman, Esquel Group; and Dr Levin Zhu, President & CEO, China International Capital Corporation Ltd.
A series of afternoon sessions will take place in both cities, offering participants marketing intelligence and practical information on how US companies can work with Hong Kong to do business in Asia, especially the mainland. Topics will include selling to China and throughout Asia, technology opportunities on the mainland, Chinese outbound investment and, in New York, Hong Kong as the global hub for China's offshore renminbi business. In Los Angeles, a special session will focus on entertainment business opportunities in Asia.
Professionals from Hong Kong's accounting, ICT, legal and marketing sectors will offer free business consultation to US participants at Think Asia, Think Hong Kong.
Hong Kong Dinner in New York
The HKTDC's Mr So will host the inaugural Hong Kong Dinner in New York, 11 June, with the Chief Executive and Heidi Crebo-Rediker, Chief Economist, US Department of State, as the evening's guests of honour. More than 450 business and political leaders from Hong Kong and the US are expected to attend the gala dinner.
In addition, five senior Hong Kong business missions, ranging from technology to fashion and fine food and wine will visit New York, Los Angeles and other US cities this month. They will include a Hong Kong-Guangdong joint investment mission seeking opportunities in green technology, manufacturing and fashion, as well as department store executives looking for American brands for the China market. Some 670 business-matching meetings will be arranged connecting mission members with US companies.
Think Asia, Think Hong Kong is organised by the HKTDC, with support from 14 Hong Kong partners and close to 120 US organisations.
