PARAMARIBO, Suriname (AP) - A homeless man was beheaded in Suriname's poverty-stricken capital, police said Friday, the latest in a series of attacks on poor vagrants that has left roughly a dozen dead since 2006.
The headless body of Dennis Jona, who was about 30 years old, was found Thursday near an unfinished apartment complex where he'd been sleeping, national police spokesman John Jones said. His head has not been found.
«According to people living nearby, Jona wasn't a nuisance. He kept to himself,» Jones said.
About a dozen homeless men have been killed in unexplained attacks on the streets of Paramaribo in the last three years _ though Jona was the first to be decapitated. Others were shot or doused with gasoline and set on fire, and one was killed with an ax.
The attacks have occurred across the city and seem to have little in common other than that they are homeless male targets, said local crime expert Lucien Naarden.
Police have no suspects or motive, and do not necessarily believe the cases are linked, spokesman Jones said. Three wealthy teenage boys were arrested in 2007, but they were released a week later due to insufficient evidence.
