Global wealth management firm Highmount Capital : is co-sponsoring the exhibition “Capital Amsterdam, 400 Years of Financial History” along with NYSE Euronext, the Dutch Central Bank and the Stock Exchange Association Foundation. The exposition will open its doors on November 20th, 2009 in the City Archive of Amsterdam and will end on February 28th, 2010.

“Capital Amsterdam” will showcase insightful financial artifacts and stories from the years 1609 to 2009. Some examples include the start of global stock trading by means of the “initial public offering” of shares of the VOC, which led to the discovery of Manhattan by Henry Hudson in 1609, the establishment of Amsterdamsche Wisselbank, the first central bank in the world, and very early

instances of “naked-short-selling”.
The exhibition will also show artifacts from the depression of the 1930s, and the rebuilding of the financial sector after WWII.

Dominique van Hilten, Partner and MD of Highmount Capital's Amsterdam office, is looking forward to the exhibition: “Amsterdam has a very rich financial history with several ups and downs. 'Capital Amsterdam' will show that financial booms and crises are of all times and therefore the exposition contains very relevant lessons which are important, even more in today’s economic climate. As philosopher George Santayana once said, ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it’.

Highmount is proud to contribute to unlocking this wealth of information and is pleased to celebrate the one year anniversary of the Amsterdam office amidst this exciting event.”

One of the bankers who made a difference in Dutch financial history is Adrianus Johannes van Hengel (1886-1936). He successfully led the reorganization of the biggest Dutch bank at that time, Robaver, which got into serious trouble in the 1920s. He was also responsible for the establishment of the Amsterdam Internationale Bank in 1924, which provided German companies access to international capital after WWI and facilitated Dutch trade. In 1931 van Hengel’s talent to rehabilitate finances was again put to action, this time in Austria, where he reorganized the Oesterreichische Credit-Anstalt für Handel und Gewerbe, and prevented Austrian government finances from collapsing.

Maarten van Hengel, grandchild of Adrianus and founding partner of Highmount Capital : , is honoured to see part of his family history on display during Capital Amsterdam. “Members of my family have contributed several materials, including the bust of my grandfather, which offer remarkable insights into life as a banker during The Great Depression. I am confident that visitors will find the exhibition a memorable experience and that they will enjoy the impressive Amsterdam City Archive," Maarten van Hengel.
