The cornea is the clear part of the eye that covers the colored portion. It is the covering through which light passes into the eye. It may become inflamed in Keratitis.

Causes of Keratitis


Keratitis may be caused by bacterial infections, viral infection or, fungal infections. Herpes simplex virus, type I, is the common viral agent. Dry eye caused by an eyelid

disorder or insufficient tear formation is another common cause of Keratitis. Foreign objects in the eye, intense light, such as from welding arcs or the reflection of intense sunlight from snow or water, (Symptoms may not appear for 24 hours after exposure), vitamin-A deficiency (rare in normal diet), allergy or sensitivity to eye cosmetics, air pollution, airborne particles (pollen, dust, mold or yeasts) and other allergens all may produce some degree of keratitis.

Signs and Symptoms of Keratitis


Keratitis produces eye pain and photophobia, or increased sensitivity to the light. Frequently, it results in excessive production of tears.
