Goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. It is located in the neck and produces a lump in the middle of the neck. When a goiter becomes very large, it may compress the trachea or esophagus and cause problems with breathing or swallowing. The disorder occurs much more frequently in women than in men.

Causes of Goiter


An insufficient amount of

iodine in the diet can lead to thyroid enlargement. The disorder is also seen as a manifestation of Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease. Hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy, adolescence, menopause, or the use of birth control pills.
Occasionally, people who take medications designed to reduce thyroid hormone production can develop goiters. Tumors of the thyroid can lead to the development of a goiter.

Signs and Symptoms of Goiter


The primary symptom is a swelling in the neck. It can range from a small lump to a huge mass. Occasionally people will develop problems with swallowing and breathing.
