Cushing's syndrome is named after Harvey Cushing, one of the father's of modern day Neurological surgery. This disorder affects the endocrine system. It results from the increased presence of corticosteroids in the body. This can either be from increased production of corticosteroids by the adrenal glands. or from taking additional corticosteroids by mouth or injection. These glands sit on the

top of the kidneys. In Cushing's syndrome, there are a number of causes of the increased steroid production.
Cushing's disease, also named in honor of Dr. Cushing, results from a tumor in the pituitary gland. This tumor secretes substances that stimulate the adrenal glands to produce excessive amounts of corticosteroids.

Causes of Cushing's Syndrome And Cushing's Disease

Cushing's syndrome is the result of excess cortisone hormone. This can be produced by adrenal glands. A tumor may form in the adrenal glands or they may enlarge from hyerplasia, where they are more active than normal. Sometimes, tumors in other locations will secrete substances that stimulate the adrenal glands. Tumors of the pituitary gland can lead to increased production of ACTH. This hormone stimulates the adrenal glands to produce corticosteroids.

Signs and Symptoms of Cushing's Syndrome And Cushing's Disease

Both Cushing's syndrome and Cushing's disease have similar symptoms. The excessive amounts of steroids produce a round, or moon-like face. The eyes are puffy and the complexion ruddy red. In women afflicted with this disorder, increased facial hair may develop. Deposits of fat develop over the upper back and trunk. Prominent stretch marks develop. Changes in the women, leads to enlargement of the clitoris and menstrual irregularities. Prolonged high levels of corticosteroids leads to hypertension, emotional changes, psychosis, and poor resistance to infection.
Cushing's disease may also have other symptoms related to the pituitary tumor. These can include headaches and changes or loss of vision. This may be particularly apparent in the peripheral vision. If the tumor is large it can affect other hormones produced by the pituitary. These can lead to panhypopituitarism.
