Constipation is varcharacterized by difficult, uncomfortable, or infrequent bowel movements. The feces is typically hard and dry. Constipation is usually harmless, but it can indicate an underlying disorder. Occasionally, constipation can lead to fecal impaction. Here, actual obstruction of the intestinal tracts occurs with the possible development of a bowel obstruction.
Causes of Constipation
The leading cause of constipation is inadequate fluid
and fiber intake in the diet. Fiber is necessary for adding bulk, holding water and creating easily passed, soft feces. Other causes of constipation include inactivity and depression. Some medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism, hypercalcemia, anal fissure, chronic kidney failure, back pain, colon or rectal cancer and irritable bowel syndrome, all may be associated with the development of constipation.
Signs and Symptoms of Constipation
Constipation is known for infrequent bowel movements. At times, there is abdominal swelling associated with this. The feces appear hard and dry. There is excessive straining during attempts to have a bowel movement. Rectal pain and bleeding during a bowel movement may occur. Following elimination, there may be the sensation of continuing fullness.
