The dura mater is a thick membrane that encloses both the brain and spinal cord. Meningiomas are tumors that arise from cells contained in this layer of tissue. The tumors are benign. Meningiomas typically grow slowly and, accordingly, can reach very large sizes before they produce symptoms. When they occur at the skull base, they may enwrap themselves with the

major arteries and cranial nerves.
Sometimes, the tumors with form a flat (en plaque) tumor. Meningiomas may from time to time be found to grow through the skull. When they do this they often cause proliferation of the bone or hyperostosis.
Meningiomas may occur in any part of the spinal canal. The symptoms they produce depend on their size and on the location of these tumors.
Malignant meningiomas occur when the tumor invades into the brain. These type of tumors are more apt to recur.

The cause that gives rise to development of meningiomas is unknown.

The signs and symptoms depend on which part of the brain or spinal cord the tumor arises. When they grow on the surface of the brain, seizures may also occur. Involvement of the skull base can lead to dysfunction of multiple cranial nerves leading to the eye, face, ear and throat.
Tumors within the spinal canal produce pain, weakness and numbness. Progressive paralysis can occur below the level of the tumor.
