Lice are tiny parasites that live on the body or in clothing, and cause skin inflammation. They occur in hairy areas anywhere, especially the scalp, eyebrows and genital area. They also occur on the skin in which clothing is in close contact with skin and moisture may accumulate, such as the shoulders, waist, genital area or buttocks.

Causes of Lice

Lice are

tiny (1 mm to 3 mm) parasites that bite through skin. They cause itching and inflammation. Some lice live on skin, although they are difficult to see, and others live in clothing near skin. Eggs (nits) often adhere to hairs.

Signs and Symptoms of Lice

Lice produce fairly typical symptoms which include itching, that may be intense at times. This severe itching is more common in hair covered areas. In these areas, eggs, or nits, are deposited on hair shafts leading to scalp inflammation. In other areas, red bite marks and hives may be noted. Depending on the location of the infection, their may be tender, swollen lymph nodes in the back of the head or in the groin.
