Esophagitis indicates an inflamed section of the esophagus. This may be due to infections or other agents.
Causes of Esophagitis
Reflux of gastric acid into the esophagus is a common cause of esophagitis. Chronic reflux of acid may lead to development of gastric lining of the lower esophagus as in Barrett's esophagitis. Herpes simplex infections can develop in the esophagus. People who
have some impairment of the immune system or have been on broad spectrum antibiotic therapy may develop fungal infections of the esophagus. Radiation of the chest or neck may damage the esophagus. Finally, connective tissue diseases such as Scleroderma may lead to scarring of the esophagus.
Signs and Symptoms of Esophagitis
The symptoms of esophagitis include upper abdominal pain and lower chest pain. The pain may radiate into the neck. Regurgitation of food may occur and is usually suggested by a bitter, sour taste in the mouth. These symptoms may be worsened when lying flat or sleeping. Painful or difficult swallowing may occur. Weight loss may develop if it becomes difficult to eat adequate amounts of food.
