www.harpers.org - Harper's Magazine announced today that Kathy J. Park has been named vice president, public relations, and Elena Guzman has been named sales representative, book publishing, art, and culture. Effective immediately, Ms. Park will report to John R. MacArthur, president and publisher. Ms. Guzman will report to Peter D. Kendall, vice president and associate publisher.

In making the

announcement, Mr. MacArthur said, "Kathy brings a breadth of marketing and public relations experience that will help increase our already strong newsstand sales and our national advertising sales. Her work at The New York Times was the ideal preparation for promoting a magazine such as Harper's, which places a premium on literary quality as well as aggressive journalism that makes headlines."

Mr. Kendall said, "Elena's solid marketing background, understanding of the way books are bought and sold, and her enthusiasm for the printed word will serve her well in building the Harper's brand among book publishers. We are pleased Elena has joined our staff and expect she'll have an immediate impact on our selling efforts."

Ms. Park will be responsible for the magazine's media relations, public relations, marketing, branding, and promotions. She is completing her M.B.A. with a concentration in marketing at Fordham University's Graduate School of Business. Previously, Ms. Park was manager of public relations for The New York Times Company from 2000 to 2005. From 1996 to 1999, she served as a publicist for CNN in its New York bureau. Ms. Park graduated with a B.S. in political science from Emory University.

Ms. Guzman will be the magazine's liaison for book publishing, art, and culture advertisers. Previously, she served in numerous roles at Basic Books, Basic Civitas, and Nation Books, most recently as marketing manager, from 2005 to 2008. Before then she was manager for Oblong Books and Music, an independent bookstore. Ms. Guzman received a B.A. in photography from Bard College.
