ATHENS, Greece (AP) - A former Greek transport minister has resigned his seat in parliament after a prosecutor ordered a corruption probe into a bus contract.
The investigation followed Greek media reports that local officials allegedly took bribes to award the contract to Neoplan, a subsidiary of German truckmaker and industrial company MAN AG.
Christos Verelis, an opposition Socialist lawmaker who was transport minister at the time, denies any wrongdoing.
He said Friday his resignation was meant to assist the investigation.
MAN has launched an internal investigation into some payments at its truck and bus division after German prosecutors started their own probe. They suspect millions of euros were paid out between 2002-2005 in illegal commissions in Germany and abroad.
