2014-04-03 13:32:36 - Lockton achieves simplified remote printing in a mixed VDI environment using UniPrint Infinity software.

Cardiff, UK, 3 April, 2013 – UniPrint, the world leader in printing virtualisation solutions, today announced that one of the world’s leading insurance brokerage firms has selected UniPrint to achieve simplified printing across their heterogeneous Virtual Desktop environment. Lockton, headquartered in the US and with a large EMEA regional office based in London, UK, is the world's largest privately owned insurance brokerage firm providing insurance, risk management and employee benefits solutions globally. From the busy London office, over 650 employees access a diverse range of applications including specialty insurance software together with Windows 7 virtual desktops. Lockton’s VDI environment utilizes VMware, Citrix XenDesktop 5.5 and Citrix Provisioning Services 6.1 to deliver to Wyse thin client desktops. Print management in such

a dispersed environment was at best time consuming; at worst challenging, through having to update hundreds of differing printer drivers.
Lockton set about the process of streamlining the print management process and through recommendation of UniPrint Gold Partner, Intercept IT, evaluated UniPrint Infinity Software. “UniPrint is easy to use and understand.” said Simon Hodgson, Senior Support Analyst, Lockton Companies LLP. “The solution has already saved me hours of work by being simpler to administer. We had previously encountered challenges managing printing within our VDI environment and UniPrint’s Universal Printer Driver has helped resolve them.”

Prior to deployment of UniPrint, printer driver management occurred on both the VDI master images and also the numerous print servers within the domain. This entailed the infrastructure team updating every vDisk for the addition of each new printer, where a driver was not already present on the images, a process that could take hours, and sometimes days monopolizing the IT support staff’s time and prompting additional support queries. Worryingly, after adoption of VDI, slow printing speeds began to manifest across the WAN as excessive bandwidth was used when uploading and downloading print data.

Fully and easily installed, Lockton were pleased to see UniPrint’s UPD negated the need to install multiple manufacturer printer drivers on the application server allowing centralised control while giving users full access to their desktop applications and different printers across their VDI environment.

"I was very surprised at how easy it was to install, configure and deploy UniPrint. I recently inherited this printing environment and it was clear quite early on it would need reviewing. UniPrint has helped me simplify and centralise printer management for our VDI environment. It is probably the easiest software I have ever deployed." Simon reflects.
Additionally, slow remote printing issues were resolved by converting print spool files to PDFs and compressing them by as much as 90%, saving network bandwidth and significantly increasing the speed of all print jobs across the enterprise and allowing users to preview, print, email, or archive each print job in PDF format.

With the number of service calls significantly dropping to IT staff resolving printing issues and without having to make time-consuming printer driver updates, Lockton’s IT department now only have to centrally manage one driver to facilitate hundreds of printers of any make or model.
“UniPrint’s Universal Printer Driver has helped eliminate many of our biggest printing headaches across our VDI environment. Any future VDI deployments I am involved in will certainly include UniPrint from the start.” Simon concludes.
