Ghostery Announces Hackathon Winner

Ghostery®, the web’s largest, most powerful and most user-friendly privacy tool, announced today the winner of its first annual “Hack the Trackers” hackathon, Team Toto.

Ghostery is used by more than 20 million people around the world to reveal the invisible web of technologies tracking them when they visit a website. The application provides a roll call of more than 1,800 ad networks, behavioural data providers, social networks and other companies that collect consumer data—and allows users to block that tracking.

The winning team from “Hack the Trackers”, Team Toto, created a browser plugin that pulls back the curtain on the people spying on you online; revealing who they are and discovering everything there is to know about them online. Toto was

The “Hack the Trackers” event in November 2013 brought together some of the best developers in the United States to create the next groundbreaking tool to address the issue of privacy in the digital age.

Contestants had eight hours in New York’s We Work Lounge to put together preliminary versions of their ideas for brand new data-tracking software. Ghostery’s crew of expert judges, including privacy expert Ashkan Soltani, Vivian Chang of Tapad – one of the most respected engineers in the industry, and Kate Kay, the editor of DataWorks for Advertising Age announced three finalists at the event. Since November these finalists’ creations have been put to an online vote to let the people decide how they want to keep their browsing secure.

Toto, consisting of developers Gustavo Faria, Fei Liu and Scott Powell, will select two of their team members to travel to Austin, TX for the South by Southwest festival in March 2014. Toto will showcase their product alongside Ghostery where they will have the opportunity to be seen by thousands of tech, music, and media professionals.
