2009-11-04 12:56:45 - Saving the planet can come in both small and big packages. Your fuel efficient car and non-carbon emitting appliances can take the better part of the job. But even small things when done by many can contribute to the effort. The lowly mobile phone can be eco-friendly as well. Motorola, LG and Samsung have shown the world it can be done. Before the year ends, you’ll get a new handset that is as eco-friendly as it gets – the Samsung Blue Earth.

Environment-friendly Features

After its Samsung Reclaim handset, the Korean mobile phone maker seems to have found its footing to continue making eco-friendly handsets. Boasting of a manufacturing process that consumes less energy and emits even lesser CO2 into the atmosphere, Samsung needs to max out its investments in eco-friendly handset.

The Blue Earth used the same production processes using materials that

are recycled from old water bottles and harmful substances like Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Brominated Flame Retardants (BFR) and Phthalate taken out. Finally, when the handset gets packages for the market, Samsung uses soy-based ink to print on the manuals and boxes made from recycled paper.

Its eco-friendliness doesn’t end there. It remains eco-friendly when in the hands of the consumers. It comes with a 5-Star energy efficient battery charger that consumes no more than 0.03w of electric power in standby mode where it may often get into as its solar panel at the phone’s back cover can do most of the charging while you talk out in the open. You get 4 hours of talk time just by exposing the handset under the sun for 14 hours. Just take it inside before the plastic body melts. Just a note, the solar panel won’t work if the phone is totally dead.

Working with handset reveals eco-friendly features as well. There’s an Eco-Mode that intelligently conserves power at the touch of a key that will automatically turn off Bluetooth when not in use or dim the LCD backlight. An Eco-Walk app tells you how many steps you’ve taken while calculating the CO2 emission reduction you’ve achieved just by walking rather than taking your car to your destination.

It’s Still a Smartphone

Of course it is. Nobody wants a mobile phone that can’t do its primary function. Here, the Samsung Blue Earth won’t disappoint. Samsung made sure it can hold a candle against the better smartphones in the market.

• It’s your basic quad band GMS/GPRS/EDGE mobile phone on the 2G network while being a twin-band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA on 3G for supporting high speed internet browsing.

• There’s a 3” WVGA TFT capacitive touchscreen supporting 16 million colors and comes with an auto-rotate accelerometer for portrait or landscape viewing with the tilt of the handset.

• You get a decent 3.2 megapixel camera that supports video recording at 15fps, face recognition and geo-tagging courtesy of its GPS receiver.

• Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and WiFi 802.11b/g are there for localized high speed wireless data connection so you can take advantage of hotspots around the city.

• Other features include Bluetooth A2DP for using wireless stereo headset, a stereo FM radio with RDS and microSD support for up to 16GB augmenting its rather modest 160 MB of internal memory.
