The GADSL (Global Automotive Declarable Substance List) is a benchmark for the automotive industry and gives information on basic substances in terms of prohibitions and restrictions. This list introduced in 2005 and compiled in co-operation with the chemical industry comprises all basic substances regulated by law globally or requiring disclosure due to other rules and regulations. It is currently updated every six months. This information on basic substances is important for components and materials that are supplied to automobile manufacturers through the supplier chain. The GADSL is relevant even for development engineers to avoid designing products involving the use of basic substances facing a ban currently or in future. The GADSL aims at compiling all the different requirements of automobile
manufacturers relating to notifiable basic substances in a single list.
The GADSL is independent of the IMDS but it is also applicable to users of the International Material Data System (IMDS), since all the basic substances featured on the GADSL list have to reported in the IMDS as per the qualifying quantity rule specific to the basic substance indicated in the GADSL. With the exception of company-specific lists, the GADSL is the only list that needs to be adhered to with regard to notifiable basic substances.
Upon the GADSL being updated, the user has to cross check his IMDS entries against this list using the "Where-Used List" analysis function provided in the IMDS. Promptness in following substance prohibitions and restrictions enshrined in the GADSL ensures delivery without delays even for the future. To achieve this, in-depth knowledge -among others- also of the GADSL and of the criteria for notifiable substances, as well as of the IMDS analysis function becomes necessary.
The Full Service Company, imds professional, offers seminars and webinars on the topic of GADSL:
Participants of the 1-day seminar "Know, verify and assign GADSL and the Application Codes" get to know the history and international objectives of the GADSL. They get acquainted with the structure of the excel-based GADSL and the criteria for inclusion of new basic substances to this list. It enables them to find, evaluate and use GADSL classified basic substances in the IMDS data base. Participants learn how to check application codes and to assign them in the IMDS, thus ensuring compliance of statutory regulations and requirements, and of the automotive industry specifications. Furthermore, they get familiarized with reporting and the IMDS Change Management. Participants can now use the IMDS analysis functions for GADSL related basic substances and the application codes in practice.
The 2-hour webinar (virtual classroom) "I now know the GADSL" imparts information on the history and international objectives of the GADSL and the regional structure of the GASG, the organisation and its members. You learn about the excel-based GADSL list and the criteria for inclusion of new basic substances to this list. This enables you to find GADSL classified basic substances in the IMDS data base and helps in early detection of critical basic substances. Participants are now equipped with knowledge on the most important aspects to make data base declarations in compliance with the law.
