Innovative Recording Concepts for the Digital Future
Fraunhofer HHI offers solutions covering a wide variety of recording scenarios – from traditional 2D capture to extended concepts that simplify 3D recording, lower its costs, and enrich it with integrated interaction concepts. Take, for instance, a depth information-based technique for the conversion of 2D to 3D content; high-speed 3D imaging for deformation analysis; or 360° images for immersive panoramic viewing. Standard image data can seldom be directly used as they have to be first adjusted, analyzed and corrected. In this area Fraunhofer HHI is developing technologies for the direct capture of metadata for use in evaluation, providing information which enables easy further use or distribution of material.
Decoding and Transporting high-resolution Data in Real-time
resolution is an essential development step not just for 2D images but for autostereo-
scopic 3D in brilliant quality for multiple users as well. Yet 4k resolution places the most stringent demands on video coding. Fraunhofer HHI develops solutions for the real-time encoding and decoding of high-resolution video based on the H.265 / MPEG-HEVC standard in whose development the Berlin research institute has been a major moving force. When transporting videos to mobile users, it’s important that the video coding and the LTE mobile wireless system work together in the best possible way – and to this end Fraunhofer HHI is optimizing the interface.
If multiple videos are transported to mobile end devices via HTTP streaming formats like MPEG DASH and HLS, the network needs more information about the videos and their salient characteristics to make for better and more equitable distribution of resources during peak traffic times. With optimized transmission technologies for LTE and the latest video coding technology HEVC data can be transported in a much more robust and efficient manner.

Glasses-free 3D – More Freedom of Movement in front of Screens plus touchless Interaction
In the field of image post-processing Fraunhofer HHI offers solutions that edit data to achieve adaptability to a wide variety of different screens and allow for viewers to select their own personal viewing preferences. Curved screens, glasses-free 3D displays and immersive projections of up to 360° are paving the way to a new dimension of visual experience. One such pioneering development offers users freedom of movement in front of autostereoscopic displays – independently of preset viewing distances. The new solution enables seamless adaption of the viewing distance in a range from half to more than double of the original viewing distance of the viewer with no impairment of depth impression or picture quality. The software arranges the 3D content so that viewers at the new distance have an impeccable 3D image before their eyes. At IFA Fraunhofer HHI is also demonstrating the latest linkage between touchless interaction and 3D real-time application development in software specially developed for the generation and visualization of digitized books and documents.
