Hibernia Atlantic, :
the only diverse transAtlantic submarine transport cable provider and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Columbia Ventures Corporation, announces it proposes to build the Project Kelvin telehouse in Fort George, Londonderry.
Hibernia Atlantic after much searching in Derry has identified their preferred location for the telehouse as Fort George on the banks of the River Foyle.
Derek Bullock, Vice President of Network Operations Hibernia Atlantic, said; “Hibernia Atlantic is delighted to be bringing the telehouse to Derry. We recognise that Fort George is one of the key locations within the city’s regeneration plan as it looks to future growth and prosperity.
“The new direct international link has the potential to be a major facilitator of that growth and in our
discussions with ILEX, the Urban Regeneration Company, we have worked hard to ensure that what we propose to build meets the city’s expectations.
“It is important that the potential investment for the city through the telehouse and the cable itself is recognised. This is the right location and local businessmen and entrepreneurs can now look to the future where there will be a new wealth of capacity and the ability to directly and securely connect to Canada, US, GB and mainland Europe.”
Welcoming the announcement, Margaret Ritchie, Minister for Social Development in Northern Ireland said, “The construction of the Project Kelvin telehouse will represent the first physical development on Fort George and I hope it will be followed by many more major developments as we continue to advance our vision of making this site an economic driver that delivers jobs and prosperity for the people of Derry and the North West.”
Derek Bullock continued, “Now that a site has been found, Hibernia Atlantic has to submit a proposal demonstrating how the telehouse will meet all the contractual requirements to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) :

for Northern Ireland and the Department Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (DCENR) :

for the Republic of Ireland. This is a normal part of the contract variation process and the proposal will be subject to approval by both departments.”
Notes to Editors.
Project Kelvin is a joint €30 million initiative between DETI and DCENR and is partly funded through the EC INTERREG IVA programme. The new cable will link Armagh, Ballymena, Belfast, Coleraine, Londonderry, Omagh, Portadown and Strabane to Europe and North America. In addition, the cable will also provide links to Letterkenny, Castleblayney, Dundalk, Drogheda and Monaghan. This build marks another key milestone in Hibernia Atlantic’s history, as the communications company is the first to deploy a cable from North America to this region.
Hibernia will also complete a cross-border build linking its existing communications network into the Northwest of Ireland, thereby reducing transAtlantic data latency and reducing the cost of international communications. With this link, network costs will compare very favourably with costs in Dublin and major UK cities while increasing competition in the international telecommunications market under the EU-funded ITERREG IV 2007- 2013 program.
