In recognition of this event, and because heart disease often results from unhealthy eating and physical activity habits, Florida Heart Group is releasing six tips for helping individuals lead healthier lifestyles.
“We recognize the leading killer of both women and men in the United States
is one of the many forms of heart disease. We believe that preventing the condition, rather than reacting to it once it occurs, is the best treatment approach. We hope that by releasing these simple tips, the general public will be able to lead healthier lives unaffected by heart disease,” said the Florida vascular clinic’s CEO Andrew Laverghetta.
Florida Heart Group’s Orlando doctors recommend all individuals implement the following tips into their own lives to experience the best results:
1. Beverages – Drink plenty of refreshing, calorie-free water and nutrient-rich, low-fat milk each day. It is recommended to drink a maximum of 4-6 ounces of juice per day, while remembering to avoid soft drinks, sweetened teas, sports drinks, energy drinks, and alcohol as much as possible.
2. Exercise – During every season of the year, adults should aim for 30 minutes of activity each day, while children should get 60 minutes of exercise on a daily basis.
3. Women’s health – For women planning on becoming pregnant, doctors recommend they consume 400 micrograms per day of folic acid to minimize the chances of certain birth defects, such as spina bifida. Women should also eat healthy fats such as omega-3 and monounsaturated fats found in nuts, olive oil, canola oil, and fish.
4. Eating healthy at school – Children have total control over how they eat at school. Parents can help children make smart choices by providing a healthy breakfast each morning, packing a healthy lunch and snack, and teaching them how to make healthy eating choices on their own.
5. Low salt diet – Salt is available at high levels in obvious places – at fast food restaurants, for example. But, the AHA notes that most sodium comes from packaged, processed foods. The AHA recommends consuming less than 1500 mg (about ½ teaspoon) of salt per day.
6. Manage blood pressure – By maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, eating a balanced diet, avoiding salt, limiting alcohol intake, and avoiding tobacco smoke, individuals can reduce their chances of experiencing high blood pressure, a leading risk factor of heart disease.
