2013-02-14 08:52:49 - After serving some of the mining sector's most valuable decision makers and sustainability practitioners at the inaugural conference in London last year, the 2013 edition of the Global Sustainable Mining Summit will be held in May in Toronto – Canada.
One of the biggest challenges facing mining organisations today is the need to mitigate envirionmental degradation that results from mining operations. With sustainability and social responsibility featuring prominently on every mining companies' priority list, it is more imperative than ever to identify common problems, along with tools, technologies and processes to reduce the social and environmental effect of mining.
Fleming Gulf Conferences, announces its 2nd Annual Global Sustainable Mining Summit, to be held on 28-29 May 2013 in Toronto – Canada. The one-of-it's kind event will present a global view on the current sustainability concerns in mining and recognise the interconnections between the economy, the environment, and society to ensure that today's needs for mineral resources are met, without compromising
the needs of the future generations.
Global Sustainable Mining held in 2012 saw the participation of industry veterans like Elisa Tonda, Head (Business and Industry Unit), Sustainable Consumption and Production, United Nations Environment Programme, Hubert Fleming – Global Director, Hatch Water, Froydis Cameron – Government and Community Relations Manager at Anglo American, Tom Burke – Policy Advisor, Energy and Clomate at Rio Tinto to name a few. The event assembled over 100 delegates who actively participated in discussions related to sustainability, climate change, water management, crisis management, and non technical challenges in mining.
This year, the focus shifts to the core branches of sustainable development, namely social, economical and environmental sustainability. The conference will addresses many key issues like greenhouse gas reduction, strategies to increase positive impacts on bio-diversity, mine site reclamation, trends and challenges in sustainability reporting, CSR initiatives and ways to enhance global sustainability of metals.
