2009-11-11 01:15:03 - Customers can now leverage their existing hardware investment, reduce TCO by over 60%, and radically improve the effectiveness of their caching tier with Gear6 Web Cache

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — November 10, 2009 — Gear6, the leading provider of Memcached solutions, today delivered the industry’s first mission critical software-only distribution of Memcached, Gear6 Web Cache Universal Distro. Gear6 Web Cache software now runs on any industry standard x86 hardware including Dell, HP, Rackable and others – safeguarding existing IT investments for customers and accelerating their Memcached

deployment.

“Much like the way Red Hat packaged the open source Linux OS for enterprise use, Gear6 has augmented Memcached with mission critical features and provides an advanced software distribution that works with the customer’s hardware to deliver a fast, highly available and more efficient Memcached,” said Joaquin Ruiz, Executive Vice President of Products for Gear6. “Customers now have support for Memcached, as well as have a dependable commercial software distro that runs on virtually whatever hardware they already have. Our Web Cache turnkey appliance offering, used at sites such as Glam Media, Answers.com and MyYearbook.com, continues to be very successful. The high demand for our Universal Distro broadens our market by giving customers a wide choice of deployment options.”

Memcached is used by 17 of the 20 most visited Web properties and thousands of LAMP, Ruby on Rails and Java sites to rapidly cache and scale dynamic web site content. Many sites have customized Memcached for specific performance, availability or manageability features. These custom enhancements come with a cost to internal engineering and operations groups. Now, Gear6 Web Cache offers customers a commercial distribution that takes the guess work out of implementing advanced Memcached features. The Gear6 Memcached distribution has been enhanced with mission-critical features such as advanced memory management, clustering, replication and improved tools for monitoring and reporting.

Today’s Web Cache release includes all the features Gear6 has introduced over the last six months in a software-only distribution. Key features include:
• Universal Distro – works with HP, Dell, Rackable and other industry standard servers
• Advanced memory management – near zero memory fragmentation
• High availability – clustering and replication support
• 100% Memcapable – Memcached protocol compliant
• Advanced reporting and management
• Rich GUI, CLI and Programmable API – for single point management

The Gear6 Web Cache Universal distribution is now generally available. To register for a trial, visit www.gear6.com/memcached-distro. Gear6 offers an extensive selection of Memcached resources and on-demand webcasts on its site.
