UK based Atlantis has its next generation ocean energy generator ready for the rough seas.
Finsoul has recently learned of plans by Atlantis Research Corp to install and test the worlds largest tidal turbine in rough waters off of the Orkney Islands coast, aimed at assisting Scotland in its drive to utilize ocean energy to power 500 000 homes by 2020.
The company’s CEO announced that the firm was investing around $25 million to build and test the turbine which has rotors with an 18 meter diameter, and has a capacity of 1 megawatt.
The AK-1000 will be installed at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, along with other similar tidal energy converters.
FinSoul believes that the Morgan Stanley backed Atlantis will be committing 15 million pounds for the testing alone in Orkney.
The firm has made
known that it is finalizing the tender for manufacturers and say the giant turbine will be produced in the UK unlike its previous smaller versions which were produced elsewhere.
Along with this project, FinSoul understands that Atlantis is working closely with the Norwegian state owned utility Statkraft to win a bid in Britain’s industry leading Pentland Firth marine energy project, reported to be the globes first industrial scale wave and tidal energy program which will provide at least 700MW by 2020.
