MANCHESTER, England (AP) - The Premier League title is at stake on the final day of the season, and Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is playing mind games again.
The veteran manager, whose team plays at Wigan on Sunday, questioned Friday whether Bolton players are taking their game against Chelsea seriously enough.
United and Chelsea are even
on points, but United has a far superior goal difference and only has to match Chelsea's result to clinch the championship.
Former United player Steve Bruce is the Wigan coach, and some have questioned his desire to deny Ferguson a 10th Premier League title.
That's not how Ferguson sees it.
«Nobody is saying anything about Bolton,» he said Friday. «People have questioned Wigan's integrity but when you look at it, the different attitudes are quite interesting. The Wigan players are coming out and saying, 'We want to beat Manchester United.' That is fine, we are a big club.
«But both teams are safe, relaxed and confident. Yet one (Bolton) can celebrate and the other is all keyed up to play against Manchester United.
Ferguson suggested Bolton players were already preparing for the summer and had been celebrating their Premier League survival during the week.
«I worked with (Bolton assistant coach) Archie Knox for many years at Aberdeen and United,» Ferguson said. «I wish he was playing because he will not enjoy having his players out celebrating and neither will (Bolton manager) Gary Megson. It is an important game. I am confident in these two guys taking their team to Chelsea.
Ferguson said he had predicted the close finish to the season.
«It will be nail-biting for the fans,» he said. «Earlier in the season I said it could go to the wire. I'm sorry I said that, but we're in the right position _ win the game, win the league.
Bolton's safety is almost certainly guaranteed after beating Sunderland last weekend.
It's the first time in nine years the title will be decided on the last day. While United fans at Wigan will be listening to news from Stamford Bridge, Ferguson will be focusing on the task in hand.
«Why should we worry what's going on there?» the Scot asked. «That won't do us any good.
Ferguson also disputed Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan's claim that the league is predictable because the same four teams _ United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool _ always dominate.
«People abroad love the Premier League and that's why it sells over the world,» Ferguson said. «Without a doubt it's the most exciting league in the world. Kevin is saying that it is predictable at the moment, but you can see a slight wind of change ... with more surprising results.
«It's not a failing league _ it's an improving league.
