Oscar-winning screenwriter and director JULIAN FELLOWES has blasted the British film industry for making "irritating movies".
The GOSFORD PARK writer, 56, is annoyed that British people prefer to watch Hollywood's output rather than films made in their own nation.
Speaking last week (ends30JUN06) at a festival for screenwriters in Cheltenham, England, Fellowes said, "(In Britain) the word 'commercial' has acquired this strange kind of pejorative pattern. If you make anything popular that might appeal to a lot of people, you have sold out. It is worthless, it has no real value.
"The French go to see French movies, the Italians go to see Italian movies, the British go to see American movies. We don't trust British films any more.
"I find the rather earnest, naive polemics of a lot of modern British films irritating."
